Toys are an integral part of any child’s life. Playing with toys is something that comes so naturally to children, that many times if no toy is available, they will find an object to turn into a toy. It is through toys that children are able to express themselves, create their own realities, begin interacting with other children, practice what they’ve learned, and learn about the world. Because toys can do so much for a child, they have become essential to a child’s development and progress.
A good toy should inspire creativity in your child. One of the most important things a toy can do is to stimulate your child’s imagination skills. If a toy can inspire your child to come up with their own stories, adventures, and dramas then it’s a great toy. Encouraging your child to be creative and imaginative is one way you can sharpen their mental capacities while young.
If a toy can hone a specific skill while inspiring creativity and imagination, then it’s an even better toy. Toys should be fun, but they’re even better if they can help your child developmentally as well. Helping your children perfect a skill like sequencing, tossing and catching, or distinguishing colors is something that is of great value. The sooner they can perfect these skills, the faster they can move on to newer ones.
Another good characteristic of a toy is that it teaches children about the world. For example, toys of doctor’s kits teach children about the role of a doctor, the importance of a doctor, and the tools associated with doctors. Children may not realize how hard it is to be a doctor, but through the toy, they are able to learn more about the world they live in, which is a great facet for any toy. Plus, this kind of toy encourages play, imagination, and several skills, making it a great toy!
Finally, great toys are safe to use. Being safe to use means they are appropriate to your child’s age (no small parts for little children), they are made with good clean materials, and they do not have any sharp objects that can potentially hurt your child. Many times, toy safety comes with how old the toy is. New toys being safer than older ones. However, toys that are well taken care of can be safe for a very long time.
There are other criteria for what makes a good toy, but those criteria usually already depend on opinions, parenting styles, and child needs. The four criteria presented above are the criteria you can use for children of all ages. As your children get older, the toys may change in size shape, or manner of use, but for as long as they fit the criteria, they are well worth the play time. Plus, don’t forget that books can fall into this criteria too!
